NCPEDP- Mphasis Assistive Technology Hub Project

About NCPEDP- Mphasis Assistive Technology Hub Project

Today, only about 10% of people who need assistive products—like wheelchairs, canes, prosthetic and orthotic devices, spectacles, low vision aids, and hearing aids—are able to access them. For example, the global production of hearing aids meets only 10% of the total need, and in developing countries, it is even lower—less than 3%.

Assistive technologies (AT) are essential in helping people with disabilities and the elderly lead more independent, dignified, and active lives. Government initiatives like the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan (Accessible India Campaign) have made good progress in improving accessibility. However, integrating assistive technology can take this further by offering personalized, practical solutions to the everyday challenges faced by people with disabilities in different situations.

The disability market in India is quite fragmented and catering to diverse needs. The supply chain for AT is weak. There is lack of awareness, and as such, a need for capacity building to incorporate AT solutions in rehabilitation. There is scope to support AT start-ups in India for scale-up and eventually, market success. There is a need to address issues related to the context in which AT operates in India, the range of activities for which it is required, the current supply side linkages, and need for new technologies to be introduced that are accessible, affordable and inclusive. The NCPEDP-Mphasis AT Hub was created to address these gaps and needs by bringing together startups, researchers, policymakers, and civil society organisations to build a more inclusive and sustainable ecosystem for assistive technology in India.

Launch and Startup Support

The AT Hub was officially launched on 17 October 2024 at EMPOWER, held at the National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH) in Trivandrum, Kerala. During the launch, 25 startups presented their innovations to an expert jury. Of these, 16 startups were selected to receive a seed grant of INR 5 lakhs each to help take their products to the next level. The remaining participants were offered mentoring support to help strengthen their business models and technical development.
