AT Hub in India: Background and Context

As part of NCPEDP’s consistent efforts to promote and advocate for rights of people with disabilities in India, the introduction of our AT Hub Project is a crucial step toward fostering inclusivity, independence, and empowerment. If we look at the global disability index, as per data published by WHO 1.3 billion people i.e.16% of the total world population is disabled. Narrowing it down in context of the Indian Ecosystem the figures estimate around 200 million i.e 14% of total population is disabled.

Having mentioned that, India is home to millions of individuals with disabilities, and the adoption of AT can significantly enhance their quality of life. Assistive technologies encompass a wide range of tools, devices, and systems designed to help individuals with disabilities perform tasks that might otherwise be difficult or impossible. These technologies include mobility aids like wheelchairs and prosthetics, communication devices for those with speech impairments, hearing aids, and screen readers for individuals with visual impairments. The Indian government, through initiatives like the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan (Accessible India Campaign), has been working to create a more accessible environment, but the integration of AT can further propel this effort by offering more personalized and immediate solutions to daily challenges. Educational programs focused on assistive technology should be introduced at multiple levels, from school curriculums to specialized training for healthcare professionals and caregivers.

At the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP), we proudly announce the establishment of the AT Hub Project in partnership with Mphasis F1 Foundation.

Challenges for AT in Indian Ecosystem

However, the success of integrating assistive technology into the daily lives of people with disabilities in India depends not only on technological advancements but also on the commitment of stakeholders across sectors. Policymakers, healthcare providers, educators, and tech developers must collaborate to ensure that AT is both accessible and affordable. Public-private partnerships can play a critical role in scaling up production, lowering costs, and ensuring distribution to remote areas.

In conclusion, while the potential for assistive technology to transform the lives of people with disabilities in India is immense, a coordinated and inclusive approach is essential. By addressing the challenges of awareness, affordability, accessibility, and training, India can take significant strides toward creating a more inclusive society where everyone, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities, could thrive.

Launch of AT Hub Project

The much anticipated AT Hub project was launched at EMPOWER -2024 held at National Institute of Speech and Hearing on 17th October in Trivandrum, Kerala. The event witnessed participation by 25 Startups which presented their pitch decks to our esteemed panel of jury to secure funding for their market outreach and tech building purposes. Out of these, 16 were selected for seed grant of INR 5 lacs to support them to take their products to the next level, expanding their reach and impact on society while the remaining were offered mentoring opportunities to help refine their business models.

Goal

The AT Hub is envisaged as a center of excellence (CoE) for research and innovation, building AT evidence base, making policy interventions and all things related to assistive technologies.  It will focus on bringing together different stakeholders from within the assistive technologies’ ecosystem in the country for exchange of ideas and collaboration between different stakeholders. It will also foster the awareness and information dissemination, in creating a knowledge base and building capacities for development of assistive technologies for India, as well as for exports.

Key Objectives

The AT Hub is committed to establishing high-quality standards across physical hubs and cluster institutions nationwide. The goal is to foster a network of hubs that work together to promote and sustain innovative AT solutions.

The Hub will set standards and advocate for accessible AT products and services. It aims to address policy gaps, enhance funding and incentives for AT startups, and promote emerging technologies such as AI, digital solutions, and robotics. There will be campaigns and events to educate the public on AT products and services, increasing acceptance and integration of AT in daily life. Acting as a resource for government and private sector initiatives, the AT Hub will advise on accessible urban planning, including street design and transport services, ensuring inclusivity in public spaces.

In collaboration with industry groups, the Hub aims to develop a compelling business case for AT, showcasing market potential and impact. Partnerships with organizations like Disabled People’s Organizations (DPOs) will focus on improving access to essential items like wheelchairs, hearing aids, and crutches. These collaborations aim to create cost-effective, accessible AT solutions for PwDs and the elderly.

Through joint sessions across hubs, the Hub will provide startups with training in product design, costing, and market access, fostering innovation and scalability within the AT sector. There is also a scope of seed funding for start-ups in order to accelerate change, fostering innovation, and making a lasting difference in the lives of millions of people with disabilities across the country.

By achieving these objectives, the AT Hub aims to drive systemic change, making assistive technology more affordable, accessible, and integrated within India’s social and economic frameworks.
