Question: What is ‘inclusive education’?

Answer: Inclusive education changes attitudes. It enables children with special needs to reach their potential and live with equality and dignity.

It is education which equips a child to meet the challenges of life. Children with disability need this all the more to supplement their different talents for making them useful members of society.

Depending upon the physical and mental status of the student, the type of education required varies as:

1. Regular: As currently being taught in schools (up to Senior Secondary level).
2. Special: For certain special categories of students (with disability) with specific facilities.
3. Integrated: Special and regular education merged in a common set up. The disabled children adapt to the environment inthe school. The disabled children adapt to the environment in the school. All children learn together in the same school, in the same classroom, with the necessary services and support. All children have their unique needs met in the same school and setting that they would attend if they did not have a disability. Thus, children with and without disabilities have the opportunity of interacting and developing friendships with each other. Such integration of children with or without disability, preferably in equal number, should be done from an early age. It can also be called ‘reverse mainstreaming’.
4. Inclusive: A regular school to accommodate all children, regardless of their physical, intellectual, social, emotional or other conditions. The school adapts itsey to accommodate disabled students. The school adapts itself to accommodate disabled students. There is no specific percentage of number in this set up. A small percentage is of those with special needs. This provides the means to improve quality of life. Arrangements for barrier-free environment and other required material are made in the regular set up for children with special needs, and children with disabilities are treated as equal partners in the community.
