Delhi to have a disabled-friendly bus system soon
The Delhi government has decided to build High Capacity Bus System (H.C.B.S.) corridor to enable 30 low-floored, barrier-free buses ply in the city.
This is a part of the government’s plan to make Delhi a disabled-friendly city by 2008.
As per the plan, 10 specially designed disabled-friendly buses will be introduced every year. Bus terminals and bus stop shelters will also be made disabled-friendly with tactile warning signs and curb cuts.
H.C.B.S. system has been introduced in many cities world over. Apart from enabling a barrier-free and disabled-friendly environment in road transportation, H.C.B.S., if suitably integrated with proper information and communication systems, can enable in decongesting and improving urban transport conditions. It is understood that about 20,000 to 30,000 passengers can travel per hour in a particular direction through this modern road transport system. It is often treated as a cost effective alternative for metro rail transport system.
